My heart sinks when I see the bicycle arrive at my local “Pasal” laden with the packages of cheese balls, potato chips, and all the chemical laden snacks. The kids and the parents alike purchase these food items and consume their chemicals without even thinking. If I flip the Nepalese Television Channels, most of them show alluring advertisements of such foods where kids relate to the heroes and want the food for its association – not for its nutrition. For this reason, parents need to take the responsibility for what their kids eat and be mindful of what children are watching on TV. Before there were so choices for these snack foods in Nepal – Nepal need not go the way of the western world with their obese children. Also there is increasing information that these foods are cancer causing and as parents we are the responsible ones. Where is the education to tell parents that these foods are not only insalubrious but also cause cancer?

Nepal offers an abundant and wonderful traditional diet that is rich in all the vitamins and minerals. Instead of promoting natural foods, they are now needing to compete with the plastic wrapped junk foods that the western world has already rejected and are being accepted here as good for children – which they are not. Parents need to be attentive and add more fresh greens, berries, and nuts to their children’s diet and monitor the junk food that is consumed. I see parents buying these snacks for their young children that clog their tongues so they can no longer enjoy the good nutrients from “real” food. I have seen mothers feeding cheese balls to babies. >> Read More
